Beach boys dominate NSW Derby heats

Brilliant SOMEBEACHSOMEWHERE colts MARAETAI and POSTER BOY were very impressive winners of their respective NDSW Derby heats at Menangle on Saturday night (February 17).

MARAETAI, who started from the outside gate, settled down second last before being set alight three deep to go up and sit parked for the last 1400 metres.

Despite his somewhat torrid passage, the colt levelled up with the leader on straightening and assumed control inside the final 100 metres. The mile rate for the 2400 metres was 1:57.9. He clocked the final 800 in 54.4 in the open!

The winner of five of his seven starts, MARAETAI was bred by Kevin and A. G. Charles from an American-bred daughter of Western Hanover. He is owned by Russell and Pam Hockham.

POSTER BOY, who began smartly from the No 5 gate, was trapped wide early before working to the lead. Carving out the final three fractions in 28.8, 27.5 and 27.5, the colt was never afterwards headed. The mile rate for the 2400 metres was 1:57.9.

POSTER BOY, who was bred and is raced by Bill and Anne Anderson’s Lauriston Bloodstock, has won 10 of his 14 outings and $235,390 in stakes.

He is out of Aston Villa, an American-bred daughter of Artsplace.
