Noted speedster Captain Bellasario (Captaintreacherous) caused an upset when he came with trademark sprint to beat his harness racing rivals in the Bestinbeds Bill Green Free For All at Menangle on Saturday evening.

Over the 2300 metres, Cam Hart took the easing favourite Nerano to the lead while the Victorian Jilliby Nitro had little option but to race outside the leader. Glitter Aint Gold ended up with a perfect one out and one back trail while Jack Callaghan had Captain Bellasario in the second group one out. Sweet On Lexy was forced back to the rear from his wide draw.
Nerano led in the back straight but Jilliby Nitro applied the pressure and the two were locked together as they negotiated the final bend. Nerano fought back but Jilliby Nitro refused to give in but then both Captain Bellasario and Sweet On Lexy both unleashed powerful runs out wide.
In a blanket finish Captain Bellasario stormed home to snatch victory over a gallant Jilliby Nitro and Glitter Aint Gold just ahead of Sweet On Lexy who was right over on the outside.
Captain Bellasario is an eight year old gelding raced by Victorian identities Jayne Davies and Noel Alexander.
Davies trained Captain Bellasario earlier in his career but at the beginning of this year he went to Luke McCarthy’s stables and since being there he’s won four races at Menangle taking his stake earnings to just under $237,000.
With his brilliant finishing sprint Captain Bellasario is well suited to the spacious Menangle circuit. Jilliby Nitro had a hard run but still battled away while Sweet On Lexy came from near last and he should greet the winners circle soon.
